The Government has a long held position of phasing out suspended sentences in Tasmania.

Elise Archer, Attorney-General. – Phasing out suspended sentences

I have today tabled the Sentencing Advisory Council’s (SAC) review under section 2 of the Sentencing Amendment (Phasing out of Suspended Sentences) Act 2017.

The review confirms our new sentencing options, such as home detention, community corrections orders and expanded drug treatment orders are valuable additions to our justice system, as an alternative to suspended sentences.

Pleasingly, the report notes suspended sentences are far less likely to be used now in the Supreme Court compared to before these reforms were enacted – demonstrating they are working as intended.
